The society’s primary mandate is to support K to 12 learning institutions which provide the option of a democratic, personalized and self-determined education.

We also subscribe to the idea that education is a life-long process. As a result, we advocate for places of learning, or “learnaries,” where people of all ages can draw upon whatever learning resources are available in the community. We further believe that a learnary need not be structured according to the traditional school model, and that one of the most important ways in which it should differ would be by making it possible for members of the community to share their knowledge, skills and experience by acting as mentors, guides, collaborators and facilitators.
